Event Details

The November talk to the West Lothian History and Amenity Society is to be given by Imogen Gibbon Depute Director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery

The talk is entitled Limited Deliberations: the Grand Match of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club at Linlithgow, 1848, by Charles Lees.

The title of the talk refers to the famous painting of a bonspiel on Linlithgow Loch in 1848. As well as depicting the curling action in the foreground, the artist has painted the faces of dozens of well-known persons of the time, including Provost Dawson of Linlithgow.

Imogen Gibbon is Depute Director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and something of an expert on the history of curling and winter sports, and particularly curling in art. As well as appealing to history buffs and art lovers, the talk should be of interest to curlers and those interested in the history of sports. And since the painting captures part of our local history here in West Lothian, there should be something of interest to everyone. All are welcome to come along.
