According to Scottish Household Survey data, rates of volunteering for adults in Scotland has remained the same over the last five years. Around three in ten adults provide unpaid help to an organisation or group. However in West Lothian (in 2016) just 14% of adults volunteered each year. The main reason that people give for not formally volunteering is work commitments (59%). Home commitments was also a frequently cited barrier (30%). However lack of awareness of volunteering opportunities was also mentioned. 19% cited lack of awareness of opportunities and 14% cited lack of awareness of groups that needed help (NCVO survey).
