Updated: Monday 8th June
You’ll no doubt be familiar with our list of businesses still trading after the inclusion in the last edition of the Black Bitch magazine. Things have moved on rapidly and, we’re happy to say, there soon won’t be much point in providing the updates.
For starters, everyone’s now pretty familiar with how to get their essentials, whether it’s using home delivery services, local support groups, or just going along to your preferred outlet, all of which are operating diligent distancing and hygiene measures. We’ve still included the “essentials” section here, however, in case some of the information is still useful to you.
This may be the last iteration of this business list (at least, one of the last). There are now almost 100 businesses on it, so it’s becoming a bit unwieldy to update regularly. People are also acclimatising to new ways of doing business, so there’s perhaps less of a pressing need to keep it going. Thanks everybody for getting in touch to tell us what’s been going on with your business, and for the lovely feedback we’ve had!
With a bit of good fortune, we will soon be entering “Phase 2” on the official road out of lockdown. Businesses classed as “non-essential” will hopefully be allowed to open their doors – not just for collection/delivery – some time before the end of June. It’s vitally important that they observe strict distancing and hygiene measures, though, or we could end up back under lockdown: a potentially devastating outcome for the local economy. As businesses begin to reopen, it’s just as much the responsibility of shoppers to observe these measures. When you come back out to support local business, please do so responsibly. Your favourite shops and services can’t wait to serve you once again!
Until then, the best way to keep up to date is generally to check the Facebook (FB) page of the business you’d like to use. If your business isn’t here but should be, please contact us here. We’ve included contact details with each entry (where available) and divided the list up as follows:

- Food & Drink
This section includes supermarkets, for everyday essentials, but also banks (there’s only one left in Linlithgow) and local suppliers. Much of this “essentials” section may not be exactly hot-off-the-press, but it’s still included just in case some of the information is of use.

Many of our wonderfully unique, independent businesses operate online, as well as from their bricks-and-mortar premises. Others, such as Linlithgow DIY, have simply adapted to lockdown with ease, taking orders by phone and arranging collection and delivery. In some cases, shops are closed entirely, but the owner wanted to get a message to customers, which we have included here. Some businesses on this list may continue to operate remotely/using deliveries, but we understand that most plan to open under “Phase 2” of lockdown easing, with enhanced distancing and hygiene practices in place.

A difficult sector to operate effectively under social distancing, but thankfully the Scottish Government will soon trust businesses to put sufficient PPE and hygiene practices in place to reopen. We certainly trust our many fantastic “hair & beauty” type businesses to do so. Two such businesses have contacted their clients with offers of remote advice and digital content to keep them looking and feeling beautiful until then!!
|Beautique Beauty Salon||Closed, but contactable via Facebook. You can purchase vouchers to help tide Aimee over until she can open doors again. Send a private FB message for skincare advice.|

Another sector, which will be unable to look forward to a swift reopening in many cases, but one which has shown surprising resilience through digital organisation. Most of the below businesses cannot really translate to an online presence, however, so we can only keep in touch with them and support however we can until reopening.
|Burgh Halls||Closed. If you have an event booked, call or email to discuss.|
|Eeek! Escape Rooms||Offering vouchers to anyone booked in and unable to attend during the virus outbreak. Existing vouchers expiring during lockdown will be accepted upon reopening.|
