Wintery blizzards, hazy summer days, barking dogs and singing birds – you can hear them all in Vivaldi’s most popular work, performed here by the Academy of Ancient Music and violinist Rachel Podger.
The Four Seasons is the centrepiece of a programme that celebrates ground-breaking innovations of the Baroque era, a time which saw the liberation and transformation of the violin into the virtuosic solo instrument we know and love today.
Gramophone’s 2018 Artist of the Year, Rachel Podger, brings her distinctive verve and zeal to a programme that also features one of the few surviving works of Maria Grimani – an early 18th century contemporary of Scarlatti and Fux in Vienna – whose music, just like that of many unjustly neglected female composers of the past, is delightfully finding its way back to the concert stage.
