hris Stout and Catriona McKay take fiddle and harp music into a new dimension. Using their grounding in Scottish traditional music as a starting point to challenge their instruments and to develop and explore new music, they have created a dynamic and adventurous sound that retains the identity of their traditions yet allows the music to have a freedom and connection to other musical styles they’ve experienced.
They have performed, explored and sculpted their musical identities together for many years and as well as being long-time members of the internationally acclaimed Shetland band Fiddlers’ Bid, they have been part of innumerable projects at home and abroad. Their adventurous spirit has led them to work with composer Sally Beamish and the Scottish Ensemble and to collaborate with musicians from Norway, Sweden, Russia, Brazil, Mozambique and Ireland.
Recognition for Chris and Catriona’s startling innovation from a traditional base has come in the shape of the Best Duo title at the BBC Folk Awards in 2018 and a Herald Angel, presented by the newspaper for excellence in performance at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2014.
With three critically acclaimed albums released and another at the preparation stage, Chris and Catriona continue to find those magical, elusive emotions that connect to the soul and allow their audiences to witness the creation of something special in the moment that is utterly captivating and hugely rewarding.
